A Web Service is a reusable component running on a Web server that seamlessly accepts incoming requests from clients or other servers over the Internet. These requests -- basically function calls – strictly use HTTP and XML, which are the lowest common denominator for communication and data transfer on the Web. By using HTTP, communication issues related to firewalls are solved. Furthermore, since XML is quickly becoming the standard method for data transmission across the Internet, it is the method of choice for data transfer in Web Services. Once a request is accepted by a Web Service, it processes the request and sends a response, including datasets and/or other relevant information, back to the calling client or server.
